Beanie - 2009-01-01 Beanie is a small and compact molasses colored hound. She is not beautiful or graceful or dignified, but she is full of beans and lots of fun. We found her in the street in Pakistan after she had been used for student surgical training and then put back out to fend for herself. She had just been spayed and was sleeping on a burlap sack in a market. We fed her there for a few nights, and finally decided to take her in. She slept like a log for 24 hours, then blossomed into a playful and mischievous sprite who wants to dance and race and run rings around all the time. She is very healthy and spayed, and she would make a wonderful pet for a family with kids and a yard and lots of energy. She could even learn to play frisbe. We desperately need to find her a home soon, or at least a foster, and must bring her to the states in late february. Please let us know if you have an interest in Beanie by emailing us at kabulcritters at gmail.com |

Best Friends - 2009-01-01 Best Friends Photo This puppy and kitten were both found on the Kabul streets the same week last November. The kitten was shivering and had pneumonia. The puppy had a bad intestinal infection and was very sick. They spent about two weeks together in the sun room, both getting intensive treatment. They spent much of their time together inside this furry hideaway that was donated to the shelter. Sadly, the kitten never recovered from her illness and died. The puppy got well and is now running around the compound in a mini-pack with the other small dogs, learning to pose soulfully whenever potential adopters come by to browse. |

Blackie - 2009-01-01 Blackie Our Three Legged Survivor! Almost Up and Running This is Blackie, a sweet little female hound who was brought to our shelter from the streets in May. Her ears had been cut off and her hind leg was badly mangled and infected from being hit by a car. We thought she would not survive, but a good friend of ours who is a surgeon volunteered to operate on her leg. He successfuly amputated it with the entire staff watching, all the infection was removed, and Blackie recovered quickly. The leg healed very well, and within several weeks she was running and hopping around like a puppy. After an appeal went out, a number of friends helped raise the money to bring Blackie to the USA, especially Cora and Brian and Maria. She made the journey in September and is currently being fostered by Mike and Melinda in Washington, D.C., while her adoptive family gets ready to move to move to a house with a big back yard. Blackie, now renamed Gracie, is so full of joy and energy that she needs lots of space to romp around and express herself. |

Digger - 2008-01-01 Digger's on her way home from Afghanistan to be fostered in Northern Virginia. If you are interested in fostering or adopting Digger, please email us at kabulcritters@gmail.com. Digger, the brown and white hound with the sweet eyes behind the wire fence, is a bouncy and affectionate girl we found curled up in an alley all by herself. She was about three months old at the time, covered with fleas and very skinny. Now she is about nine months old, very well fed and very healthy. She is full of beans and loves to play catch and roll in the grass. She would be happiest spending every single moment with people. She is a perfect dog park dog, and perfect for families with kids who can run and play with her. |

Honey - 2009-01-01 Honey, the small yellow hound, was found on the street as a small frightened puppy with a broken hind leg, probably from being hit by a car. Someone brought her to us, and we were able to operate and repair the leg with assistance from an international vet. She has now totally recovered and romps around the yard, holding her own with larger and stronger dogs. She is a ball of energy but she also clings to people, always running up to greet us with kisses and becoming sad when we leave. She is now about nine months old, still small and slim, and she will not get much bigger. she would make a great addition to a home with a small yard or limited space. she has lived with dogs of all kinds and loves everyone she meets. On Nov 21st Honey flew to Boston and is currently being offered up for adoption in that area. If you would like to know more about adopting this dog, please email us at kabulcritters@gmail.com. She's a SweetHeart! |

My Donna - 2009-01-01 Tennis Anyone? This frisky little girl is MY DONNA, a friendly and playful hound we found wandering and emaciated near the Kabul airport last spring. The word for airport in the local language is maidan, pronounced My Don, so we named her Maidan and I converted that to My Donna. She is now happy, spayed and rather stout after about nine months at the shelter. Her favorite activity is to play with a tennis ball. If you throw it, she will fetch it, bring it back and drop it at your feet and look at you expectantly, just as if she had been doing it all her life. My Donna needs a home with an active family, hopefully including someone tireless enough to play ball with her all day. If you would like to adopt her or help find her a home, please email us at kabulcritters@gmail.com. |

Sausage - 2008-01-01 We found sausage, the black and white spaniel type dog, lying in a mud puddle in the street on a stormy day in Kabul last winter. when we tried to approach him, he started dragging himself away through the mud and we realized one of his legs was broken. We finally caught him, put him in a crate and took him to the shelter. It turned out that his leg had been broken a long time ago and then healed. It is permanently damaged and unusable but totally healed, and he is now in very good health. At first he hid in a corner and growled at everyone, but within a few weeks he had relaxed and become very happy with the staff and the other dogs. He has been living with us now for about nine months. He would make an excellent companion for someone who is at home a lot and wants a dog that does not need a lot of exercise. Sausage is basically a couch potato, but it is amazing how agile he is on three legs. He is healthy, vaccinated, friendly and sociable. |
